these are a few of my favorite things

i have an almost overwhelming love of all things 'hunger games.'  i can't explain it.  i'm slightly embarrassed by it.  and i don't understand it.  but...well, i love it.  i own and have read all the books several times.  i've seen the movie (though only once, but it was on IMAX).  and today i finally listened to the soundtrack in its entirety.  that fact, plus my love of movie/musical soundtracks leads me to this blog.

here we have it, my top 5 favorite soundtracks (today...could be different tomorrow):
(in no particular order)

You've Got Mail

i love this soundtrack more than i love the movie...which is saying something as i definitely like the movie a lot.  i really enjoy the quirkiness of this soundtrack.  add bonus, it's very kid friendly making it a great way to introduce kids to greats like louis armstrong, jimmy durante, bobby darrin and stevie wonder.  and i love things that make me happy and this soundtrack never fails to make me smile.

Twilight (only the soundtrack to the first movie)

i'm not going to try and explain myself on this one.  i don't think there is any explanation that would excuse my love of all things twilight.  i fell in love with the books the week the first one was released and have never been able to figure out why.  i don't find the story original.  i don't think the movies are that great (and the first one is really awful).  in fact, i really hate the main 2 characters.  like i said, it makes no sense.  but the one thing the first movie had going for it was what i think to be a great soundtrack to propel the tedium along.  all i can say is that just like the books and the movies, i like the way the music on this soundtrack make me feel...quiet, a bit sad and nostalgic and yet weirdly hopeful.

Les Miserables - Original Broadway Cast Recording

this is my absolute favorite musical.  has been since high school.  i've seen it on broadway.  i've seen it performed in various other locations as well including several high schools.  if it is being performed somewhere near me i try to see it.  i would go so far as to say BEST MUSICAL EVER!  i'm sure plenty would disagree, but i don't think anyone would argue that it is definitely ONE of the best musicals ever.

The Hunger Games: Songs from District 12 and Beyond

this soundtrack blew me away.  i really don't remember paying much attention to the music while i was watching the movie so i really didn't think this soundtrack would make much of an impression, but it definitely did.  every song on it fits the book/movie to perfection.  even if i hadn't seen the movie, i could have guessed while listening to this cd, what scenes played inspiration to every song.  but the thing that blew me away the most was the fact that artists that i've never liked in the past managed to change my mind about them...at least a little.  and i was introduced to some artists and groups i will definitely be checking into further.  an example or two...  taylor swift is someone i have actively gone out of my way to avoid.  until i started my current job, i think i can say i had never listened to anything sung by her all the way through.  but her 2 songs on this soundtrack are great, especially "safe & sound".  and while i find adam levine of maroon 5 to be adorable on 'the voice', i really find his music to be grating.  but the song you'll hear above totally worked for me.

and lastly...  Disney's Beauty and the Beast - Original Broadway Cast Recording

i loved the disney movie when it was released and it is still my favorite disney animated full length movie.  but when i was in high school, i went on a trip to washington, d.c. and was privileged enough to see the original broadway cast perform this at the kennedy center before they opened on broadway and was left in awe.  all the songs from the movie i loved were in the musical with the added bonus of a few new songs.  'if i can't love her' is one of the best added bonuses ever.  i cried like a baby while listening to the beast sing it that night in d.c.  music should move you to feel something and this soundtrack makes me laugh, makes me cry and even makes me angry.  love it!

Note on song selections:
the song i've picked from each soundtrack to feature is the one that really makes me love the soundtrack the most.  not necessarily the song i love the most, though for most of the soundtracks that's the case, but the song that to me, makes the soundtrack memorable in someway.

i'm going on a road trip this summer...you can bet all 5 of these soundtracks will get played at some point during the drive.
